A common question that people have about home ABA services is: How many hours of therapy do I / does my child need to have?  The answer to this question is that different people can benefit from different amounts and types of ABA therapy.  For example, some clients and their families prefer to consult with a BCBA once per week or once per month, whereas other clients, especially young children, tend to benefit from more intensive ABA services provided for as many as 35 hours per week.  Most clients fall somewhere in between these two extremes.  Several factors influence how much therapy someone will benefit from, including:

  • their age
  • the skills they would like to address using ABA
  • the results of interviews and assessments conducted with a BCBA
  • the desires and choices of the client and their families
  • the amount of ABA service being provided in other settings
  • the rate of progress during ABA sessions
  • children beginning 1:1 ABA must have 3 or more sessions per week in order to promote skill acquisition, whereas children who are transitioning out of ABA may benefit from fewer sessions
