A functional behavior assessment (FBA) is a process that identifies the function of, or reason for, maladaptive target behaviors. FBA results lead to the development of positive behavior support procedures that include methods to reduce inappropriate behavior while increasing appropriate, functionally equivalent, replacement behaviors. During the FBA process, a behavior analyst operationally defines target behaviors, interviews caregivers, interacts with the client, observes and collects data in multiple environments, and sets up additional data collection systems to provide further information that will direct treatment decisions. Recommendations made by NEBS behavior analysts are always based on systematic research and individual data.
